Recycling to Reuse: Audi adopts material recovery strategy

Auto recycle

Toronto, Ontario — Audi says it is implementing an economically viable recycling strategy to recover and reuse materials from end-of-life vehicles.

This year, the Volkswagen subsidiary will begin shredding thousands of pre-production vehicles in the EU and processing them into high-quality steel scrap. That steel will then be fed back into Audi’s supply chain using a digital material account — a system that tracks and credits recycled material volumes.

“With the digital material account, Audi is pioneering a system in the automotive industry through which it can procure valuable recycled raw material resources more independently of the market,” Renate Vachenauer, Audi Board Member for Procurement. “Audi demonstrates that sustainability and economics go hand in hand.”

The move comes during a period of turmoil on global markets prompted by U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to implement tariffs on many countries. According to a press release, Audi staff expect the recycling program to help improve its sustainability and market resilience.
