Kia Canada EV owners can now earn money for charging their vehicles at home through a new program from Variablegrid Adaptive Power.
Variablegrid Plus pays eligible Canadian EV drivers 10 cents per kilowatt-hour for home charging. The program converts charging activity into compliance credits and provides payments without requiring drivers to change when or how they charge, according to Variablegrid.
“Variablegrid Plus brings the benefits of multiple energy programs together in one simple experience for EV drivers,” said Dee Murphy, chief operating officer at Variablegrid. “Sign up, and the charger does the work for you. The more you drive, the more you earn. It’s like being paid to fill up.”
The program is available to EV owners living in single-family homes and multi-unit residential buildings. Variablegrid estimates a driver travelling 20,000 kilometres annually in a Kia EV5 could earn about $392 per year.
Customers who pair a Variablegrid home charger with the company’s Energy Management controller can also receive up to $350 in upfront savings.
Variablegrid and Kia Canada have partnered since 2025, with Kia offering the company’s adaptive load management technology to help homeowners install Level 2 charging without upgrading electrical service capacity.
The technology manages charging based on available electrical capacity, time-of-use rates and demand response programs, which Variablegrid said can also help reduce household electricity costs.
Kia Canada is the first automaker to offer Variablegrid Plus through its dealer network.
“Kia Canada is the first manufacturer partnered with Variablegrid to extend a direct financial incentive to electric vehicle owners that puts money right back into customers’ pockets,” said Elias El-Achhab, vice-president and chief operating officer at Kia Canada.
El-Achhab said the program builds on Kia’s current EV lineup, which includes the EV3, EV4 and EV5, as well as its partnership with Variablegrid.
