Quebec City, Quebec — Last Monday, the Quebec government announced the official adoption of a bill that will prohibit the sale of certain gas-powered vehicles by 2035.

This ban will specifically take place in two stages, with the first part beginning on January 31, 2034, when it will be illegal in the province to advertise the sale of light combustion vehicles of the 2035 model year or later, regardless of whether it is used or new. This rule will also apply to hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicle models.

Following this, beginning on December 31, 2035, selling and leasing new light combustion vehicles of 2034 model year and earlier will be banned.

In an official news release, the Ministry of the Environment, the Fight against Climate Change, Wildlife Parks commented that “the sale of combustion engines will also be prohibited, except to replace a defective engine in a vehicle already on the road in Quebec.”

Other exceptions include vehicles used by emergency services. Moreover, light combustion vehicles already registered in Quebec will continue to be allowed to be driven and resold.

The new law also does not apply to motorcycles and off-road vehicles.

In an article from CTV News, the news source further notes that Quebec Solidare (QS) has requested that the bill go even further in cutting greenhouse gas emissions by banning the sale of light gas-powered vehicles by as early as 2030.

However, the Quebec government previously raised concerns about a lack of available EVs to serve market demand if combustion-engine vehicles were to be banned before 2035.
