Kia Corp. sold electrified vehicles at a record pace in the first quarter of 2026, a trend collision and EV repair shops in North America will want to watch as hybrids and battery-electric models make up a growing share of the vehicles on the road.

The automaker reported global retail sales of 232,000 electrified vehicles — hybrids, plug-in hybrids and full battery-electric models combined — in the quarter, up 33.1 per cent from a year earlier, Kia said in its first-quarter business results released April 24. Electrified models now account for 29.7 per cent of Kia's total global sales, up from 23.1 per cent a year ago. Battery-electric sales led the growth, surging 54.1 per cent to 86,000 units, while hybrid sales climbed 32.1 per cent to 138,000 units, with hybrids driving growth in the U.S. and EVs gaining ground in Europe.

For repair shops, the numbers point to a steadily expanding population of high-voltage vehicles requiring specialized diagnostic equipment, battery-safe lifting procedures and technicians trained to work around high-voltage systems.

Kia posted quarterly revenue of 29.5 trillion South Korean won (about US$21 billion), up 5.3 per cent and a company record, with global wholesale sales reaching 779,741 units. Operating profit fell 26.7 per cent to 2.21 trillion won, which Kia attributed to the first full quarter of U.S. tariff impact, along with higher sales incentives and warranty provisions tied to currency swings. Its global retail market share climbed to 4.1 per cent, surpassing 4 per cent for the first time, even as industry demand fell 7.2 per cent worldwide. Growth was supported by expanded hybrid supply in North America — including the redesigned Telluride and Sportage — and EV momentum in Europe.

Kia's electrified lineup is set to expand further, with the EV2, EV3, EV4 and EV5 playing a larger role in Europe, alongside hybrid versions of the Telluride, Sportage and Seltos in North America. For shops serving Kia customers, the message is consistent with recent quarters: electrified models are no longer a niche part of Kia's business, and repair volumes tied to hybrid and EV powertrains are likely to keep climbing alongside them.
