Richmond RCMP is warning residents about an increase in electric vehicle charging cable thefts, with multiple incidents reported across the city in recent weeks.
Police said several thefts and attempted thefts occurred in the Broadmoor neighbourhood, with another reported in Shellmont. In one case, a location was targeted three times within the same month.
Crime analysis identified a notable increase in EV charger thefts throughout May, although investigators have not confirmed whether all of the incidents are connected. The thefts are similar in location and method to a series reported in Richmond in 2024.
Surveillance footage reviewed by investigators shows a suspect arriving on an electric bicycle and targeting charging cables at residential properties. Police believe the thefts are opportunistic and that the cables are being taken for resale.
Richmond RCMP is continuing to investigate whether the recent incidents are connected to each other or to previous thefts.
Police are advising EV owners to remove and store charging cables when they are not in use and to consider motion-activated lighting, security cameras and doorbell cameras around parking areas. Owners are also encouraged to park in well-lit, visible locations and record the serial numbers of their charging equipment.
