Tricky Trike: B.C. EV makers discontinue Solo electric three-wheeler, buybacks open

Electrameccanica-Red-SOLO-front

Vancouver, British Columbia – ElectraMeccanica, a B.C.-based electric vehicle (EV) maker has discontinued sales of the three-wheeled Solo, and initiated a buyback on all sold Solos since 2019.

According to a company press release, this follows a previous safety recall where the vehicle may experience a loss of propulsion, losing acceleration but maintaining critical functions such as steering, brakes and lighting systems.

While the vehicle can be restarted after a short period of time and safely pulled over, this sudden loss of propulsion increases the risk of a crash. Consequently, ElectraMeccanica has initiated a recall with a full buyback, inclusive of taxes, fees and shipping while issuing refunds to reservation holders.

First-generation Solos produced in New Westminster, B.C. were not subject to the recall, and were produced locally under the guidance of automotive consultant, Henry Reisner. Solos affected by the recall were produced in Zongshen, China.

ElectraMeccanica will refocus its efforts to produce a four-wheeled EV, and will produce Stag UTVs for Volcon at its 235,000 sq-ft manufacturing facility at Arizona in the meantime, according to Driving.ca.
