EV Incentives: SWTCH offers free chargers, cash for home charging

Toronto, Ontario -- SWTCH Energy is launching a residential electric vehicle charging program aimed at encouraging home charging by offering Canadian single-family homeowners a free Level 2 charger and modest financial incentives tied to electricity use.

Under the program, participants receive three cents per kilowatt-hour of electricity used to charge an electric vehicle at home. For an average EV driver, SWTCH estimates that could translate into roughly $100 to $150 annually. Payments are issued by direct deposit once a participant’s balance reaches $100.

The Toronto-based charging provider said the initiative is designed to lower the upfront cost of installing home charging equipment while linking residential charging activity to Canada’s federal Clean Fuels Regulation carbon credit system. Electricity used for home charging generates carbon credits, which are then monetized, with a portion of the revenue shared with participating homeowners.

Carter Li, SWTCH’s chief executive officer, said the program is intended to make home charging more accessible while supporting broader EV adoption.

“SWTCH is doing our part to make the switch to electric easier and more rewarding for Canadians. By building the infrastructure and business model to turn home charging into carbon credits, we’re giving homeowners a way to earn money while helping accelerate EV adoption nationwide.”

The program is open to homeowners across Canada who already own an electric vehicle or plan to purchase one. There are no monthly or annual participation fees. SWTCH is delivering the initiative in partnership with Plug’n Drive, expanding beyond its existing focus on multifamily residential and commercial charging installations.

Participants may also qualify for provincial or utility incentives that help offset installation costs, including programs offered by BC Hydro and Quebec’s Roulez Vert initiative, provided the charger is installed by a licensed electrician.

To participate, homeowners must order a charger through SWTCH’s online store, install the unit at their residence and connect it to home Wi-Fi using the company’s mobile app. Once connected to the SWTCH network, charging activity is tracked automatically.

More details about the program are available through SWTCH’s website.
