Toronto, Ontario -- BC Hydro’s public electric vehicle charging network has surpassed 700 ports across British Columbia following the addition of 88 charging ports at 28 sites previously managed by the Ministry of Transportation and Transit.
The latest expansion marks a major milestone in efforts to grow the province’s clean transportation infrastructure. The newly incorporated sites include 33 fast chargers at 50 kilowatts, 16 fast chargers at 25 kilowatts, and 39 Level 2 chargers located along major highways and travel corridors.
“Surpassing more than 700 charging ports is a clear reflection of BC Hydro's commitment and leadership in building a reliable and accessible EV public charging network across British Columbia,” said Adrian Dix, minister of energy and climate solutions. “This expansion reinforces our commitment to build the infrastructure needed to support the growing demand for electric vehicles and to drive sustainable economic growth throughout our province.”
Once fully integrated by the end of 2025, all 28 newly added sites will operate under BC Hydro’s energy-based rates, approved by the B.C. Utilities Commission and aligned with other public charging services in the province.
“By transferring these 28 electric vehicle charging sites to BC Hydro, we're streamlining our focus on maintaining a safe and efficient transportation system for all British Columbians,” said Mike Farnworth, minister of transportation and transit. “BC Hydro's expertise and infrastructure make it the ideal steward to ensure reliable charging across the province.”
The announcement comes amid record EV adoption across British Columbia, with more than 215,000 electric vehicles now on the road.
“As electric vehicle adoption increases across B.C., we're investing in the infrastructure needed to support that growth,” said Charlotte Mitha, president and chief executive officer of BC Hydro. “This expansion strengthens our public charging network and ensures EV drivers benefit from BC Hydro's reliable service, including 24/7 customer support and access to clean, affordable electricity.”
In the past year alone, BC Hydro has tripled the size of its public charging network, adding 418 new ports and opening about two dozen charging hubs across every region of the province. The network also includes new 350-kilowatt fast chargers capable of delivering up to 100 kilometres of range in five minutes.
BC Hydro operates 114 of the 155 fast-charging sites along the province’s Electric Highway — more than 70 percent of the network. Once the transition of the 28 Ministry sites is complete, the utility will manage more than 90 percent of the Electric Highway’s charging locations.
Today, BC Hydro’s fast-charging network includes 709 ports across 160 sites provincewide, with plans to reach 800 ports by spring 2026. The utility also plans to debut its first 400-kilowatt charger later this year, offering 100 kilometres of range in just three minutes.
The chargers are funded through a partnership between BC Hydro, the Province of B.C., and Natural Resources Canada.
