Toronto, Ontario -- Figure AI founder Brett Adcock says one of the company’s humanoid robots has been operating on a BMW production line for 10 hours a day over the past five months — a claim that, if confirmed, could signal one of the first sustained industrial uses of humanoid robotics.

Adcock made the announcement in a post on X, saying the robot has been working in BMW’s South Carolina body shop assembling rear body panels for the X3 model. He said BMW and Figure are “the first in the world to do this,” describing the program as the first to see humanoid robots integrated into daily automotive production.

BMW announced its partnership with Figure AI in early 2024, saying one humanoid robot would be tested at its South Carolina facility. At the time, the automaker described the effort as an exploratory trial aimed at studying how the robot could interact with existing production systems and operate safely alongside workers.

According to Fortune, BMW’s Figure robot was, as of earlier this year, performing limited tasks during off-hours rather than in routine production.

The automaker has not commented on Adcock’s latest claims and has referred questions back to Figure AI.

Adcock has since defended his statements online, saying the company is prepared to take legal action over what he called “mischaracterizations and downright lies” in media coverage.

The report comes as OEMs and repair facilities increasingly experiment with robotic systems. As previously covered by Collision Repair magazine, automation continues to gain traction on shop floors.

Earlier this year, Collision Repair  highlighted emerging Canadian robotics projects aimed at assisting technicians with prep and refinishing tasks, illustrating how manufacturing-grade technology is beginning to make its way into repair environments.
